Welcome to my website!

I am Michele De Gennaro, and this platform provides an overview of my professional profile and journey.

Born in Naples, Italy, in 1984, I have always been drawn to quantitative sciences. I pursued my passion by studying engineering at the University of Naples Federico II, where I earned a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering in 2007 with top honors (110/110 cum laude).

At 23, I began my career as a research project engineer at the university, while simultaneously embarking on a Ph.D. in computational fluid dynamics and aeroacoustics. My academic and professional pursuits took me beyond Italy, first to the UK and later to Austria. During my postdoctoral tenure, I complemented my technical expertise with a postgraduate Master’s degree in Management from the Bologna Business School, focusing my thesis on the management of research within the European Framework Programme.

Over the years, I have gained diverse experience across a variety of sectors, including aerospace, automotive, electric machines, semiconductors, Li-ion battery technologies, data and text mining, and big data analysis. This interdisciplinary expertise is reflected in my publications, which span these fields and more.

Beyond my professional endeavors, I have a wide range of personal interests, from finance, music, and sports to literature. Each chapter of my journey has broadened my perspective, allowing me to explore new opportunities and ideas, making this an enriching and rewarding path so far.

Here is a brief outlook of my profile:

  • Results-oriented Ph.D. engineer, with 15+ years of experience in R&D at an international level.

  • Excellent project management, project acquisition, project coordination, and team management skills, with specific expertise on EU projects and programmes (climate, energy, and transport).

  • Sound experience in policy support activities at EU/UN level: (i) UN/ECE for regulating hybrid and electric vehicles (battery durability and hybrid power determination), (ii) revision of the Regulation (EC) No. 715/2007, (iii) support to UN/ECE Reg. 101 and (iv) Directive 2014/94/EU.

  • Strong computational and analytical skills, with expertise in numerical simulation and modeling, data management and statistics, data mining, and scientific programming.

  • Broad scientific culture and excellent knowledge of the EU institutions, policies, and funding instruments for research and innovation.

  • Natural leadership and organizational attitude, capable to analyse and prioritise complex scenarios; team player with a sensibility for human and professional relationships.

  • Decision-maker, capable to adapt to changing environments, willing to travel.

Here are my Awards:

In June 2008 I received the "V. Losito Award" as best aerospace engineering student of the University of Naples in the academic year 2007/08.

In June 2014 I received the European Commission "Best Young Scientist Award", for the relevance of my contribution to the definition of future European policies in the fields of low-carbon mobility and alternative fuel infrastructure development for smart cities.

In June 2015 I received the European Commission "Best Scientific Paper Award", for the paper "M. De Gennaro, E. Paffumi, G. Martini, Customer-driven design of the recharge infrastructure and Vehicle-to-Grid in urban areas: a large-scale application for electric vehicles deployment, Energy, Volume 82, 15 March 2015, Pages 294–311, 2015".
