Welcome to my website!

I am Michele De Gennaro, and thanks for visiting my website. This is intended for providing you with an overview of myself and my professional profile.

I was born in 1984 in Naples (Italy) and I have always had a strong interest in quantitative sciences. I have studied Engineering and the University of Naples Federico II, and in 2007 I completed my Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering with the highest achievable grade (110/110 cum Laude, according to the Italian University system).

At that time I was 23, and I started immediately working in my University as "research project engineer", while, in parallel, I started a Ph.D in computational fluid dynamics and aeroacoustics. This journey brought me away from Italy, going first to UK, and then to Austria. The Ph.D. kept me busy until 2010, and right after, during my PostDoc, I completed my formation with a post-graduate Master in Management at the Bologna Business School, developing a Thesis on the Management of Research within the European Framework Programme. Many things happened afterward, bringing me through different locations and professional positions. Each new experience enlarged my vision, opening my eyes to new possibilities and scenarios. So far, it was a very interesting journey.

As of today, my skills range across a wide variety of technological fields, going from aerospace to automotive, through electric machines, semi-conductors, Li-ion batteries technologies, data and text mining, big data analyses, and much more. This variety is reflected in my publications, where all these elements are visible.

My range of interests is even wider, touching finance, music, sports, and literature.

Here is a brief outlook of my profile:

  • Results-oriented Ph.D. engineer, with 15+ years of experience in R&D at an international level.

  • Excellent project management, project acquisition, project coordination, and team management skills, with specific expertise on EU projects and programmes (climate, energy, and transport).

  • Sound experience in policy support activities at EU/UN level: (i) UN/ECE for regulating hybrid and electric vehicles (battery durability and hybrid power determination), (ii) revision of the Regulation (EC) No. 715/2007, (iii) support to UN/ECE Reg. 101 and (iv) Directive 2014/94/EU.

  • Strong computational and analytical skills, with expertise in numerical simulation and modeling, data management and statistics, data mining, and scientific programming.

  • Broad scientific culture and excellent knowledge of the EU institutions, policies, and funding instruments for research and innovation.

  • Natural leadership and organizational attitude, capable to analyse and prioritise complex scenarios; team player with a sensibility for human and professional relationships.

  • Decision-maker, capable to adapt to changing environments, willing to travel.

Here are my Awards:

In June 2008 I received the "V. Losito Award" as best aerospace engineering student of the University of Naples in the academic year 2007/08.

In June 2014 I received the European Commission "Best Young Scientist Award", for the relevance of my contribution to the definition of future European policies in the fields of low-carbon mobility and alternative fuel infrastructure development for smart cities.

In June 2015 I received the European Commission "Best Scientific Paper Award", for the paper "M. De Gennaro, E. Paffumi, G. Martini, Customer-driven design of the recharge infrastructure and Vehicle-to-Grid in urban areas: a large-scale application for electric vehicles deployment, Energy, Volume 82, 15 March 2015, Pages 294–311, 2015".
